Bio
Joan 'Lyric' Leslie is a Harlem, NYC native, performance poet, nonprofit consultant, storyteller and podcast host. Her one-woman show, "The More Black Girl Than Magic" Experience was birthed in 2017 after being asked to define what made her and the other women in her life magical, and she's been committed to answering that question through her work ever since.
Lyric takes you on a journey of defining courage, healing and self-love through her stories, poems and comedy. She has been a member of two national poetry slam teams and is featured on Button Poetry, Write About Now, All Def Poetry and Voyage ATL Magazine. Lyric is a Southern Fried Poetry Slam Finalist and a 2-time back to back Queen of the South Poetry Slam Champion. She has been performing for audiences in academic, corporate, and social spaces throughout the country since 2009, using her performances and workshops to empower youth and communities of color to find the magic in their own stories.
“Plot twist: the black boys in my poems now live to see how the story ends.”
